One of my favorite bike routes takes me through the Ballard locks. While this route probably does take longer because you have to walk within the park premises and generally in the summer season the locks is busy with tourists. But at the locks it a joy to take a slower pace to enjoy the beautiful gardens, sight a greedy blue herons that lurk around looking for an easy meal, salmon queuing to go up the ladder or the boats using the locks to go either to Lake Washington or Puget Sound. People watching the amazement of the tourist is also a good time.
However, my post today is about the locks when it's empty. Have you ever seen the locks without water? Neither had I until one day in March when I was biking downtown. These photos are taken of the small locks....can you imagine what the large locks must look like empty?

Drop by in November and you will get your wish. That's when they close down the big locks for a week or two for their annual cleaning. Here's a pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/guardpoint/3065812095/in/set-72157608282116482/
